Inspirational

In this introductory session, Marcus will share his insights into the power of ambition and how the brain works when you have a definite purpose in mind.

What is your destination? And how can you bring others with you to that destination?

    Keynote Presentation
How to be a brilliant CEO: learning lessons from history to secure your legacy

    Outside-In

Michael Aldous is author of The CEO: The Rise and Fall of Britain’s Captains of Industry, which explores how the role and purpose of leaders of Britain’s largest companies have changed across the 20th and 21st centuries, and the lessons we can learn from their successes and shortcomings.

Drawing on insights from the book, this discussion traces how leaders have historically fused strong values, personal purpose, accountability and shared destiny into long-term company success.  Subsequently, he outlines the challenges that have emerged across the twentieth century that make these outcomes increasingly difficult to achieve.

Through this discussion he asks, how, in today’s complex pressurised business environment, can you provide long-term vision and stewardship to the company you lead?

To answer this question, we think about the design and purpose of leadership roles, and the importance of organizational architecture in creating the parameters to make good decisions, including:

    • avoiding the trap of short-term thinking
    • the personal and professional behaviours that successful leaders share
    • taking a purposeful approach to succession
    • why good governance really matters

Michael Aldous, Business Historian, Author and Senior Lecturer, Queen’s University Belfast

The Power of Ambition – group work

    Inspirational

First you’ll work individually to create a first draft of a strategy setting out an “end state” for your firm.  What are the steps to reaching your destination? How can you create a compelling vision for that end state?  Then, you’ll go into pairs to stress test your plan.

How demographic disruption is reordering the world – and what you need to know about it as a leader, an employer, and a human being

    Inspirational

Alongside tech disruption, demographic disruption (changing beliefs, experiences, habits and values) is transforming the world.

Generations at work, society and in politics have never been so far apart.

Dr Eliza Filby is a historian, author and thinker who studies society through the prism of age and generations – from Baby Boomers to Generation Alpha – examining how the traditional lifecycle, family life and individual values are being reordered and remade in the 21st century.

Her work isn’t about predicting the future, rather it’s about helping people and companies recognise the forces quietly rewriting our world and what they mean for the choices we make now.

Her most recent book, Inheritocracy: It’s Time to Talk about the Bank of Mum and Dad was published in September 2024 and became a Top Ten Sunday Times’ Bestseller.
