Social/Networking

A key purpose of Legacy is to allow you to build valuable personal connections and to enable those relationships to develop.

We’ll kick off with the most basic, and least challenging, of icebreakers, splitting into two groups, then into pairs. Each pair will be given a total of four minutes to ask and answer pre-set questions about your professional life, designed to allow the pairs to get to know each other quickly.  After four minutes, we’ll change partners and the activity repeats until every managing partner has met the others in their group.

17:20 – 18:00

Shape of the Legal market (part I)

Sector Knowledge/Expertise

Your future stakeholders – what will each most value in 20 years?

What should you be doing now to ensure that your future firm can attract clients, retain people and compete effectively?  To ensure that your supply chains and community engagement meet the standards of your future stakeholders?  How will the decisions you make now be viewed by all of these parties in 20 years?

Lisa Hart-Shepherd, CEO, Lamp House

Yet, you have an opportunity and obligation to create a legacy for the next generation, to plant trees you’ll never see.  How can you dig deep, when people and/or circumstances are against you, to create a lasting legacy?  James will distil his powerful and practical lessons for leadership and creating a legacy.

James Kerr, international best-selling author

James will work with attendees in small groups, discussing how to apply these lessons.

    • What kinds of things might happen over the next 10, 15, 20 or 25 years?
    • What does the “average” firm look like now and how is that likely to change?
    • What will be the future employee ask?
    • How will firms use tech and the office differently in future?

Can private equity (PE) funding help you secure your firm’s legacy?

What is the funding landscape for legal and how does PE measure up to the alternatives? What does PE look for in a business? What is PE not looking for? Succession planning for growth

Growth is constrained by lack of clear succession planning for the managing partner and for other senior partners. s. This lack of planning creates inward focused tension within the business and constrains the ability of the partners to have an outward looking focus and grow the business. Jonathan will outline options for planning, removing a common obstacle to growth.

    Getting law firm mergers right

How does one measure success in law firm mergers, and what factors drive that success? Almost all of the serious merger research that has been done over the past half century has been on listed companies, using performance metrics related to stock market behaviour and other factors irrelevant to most professional service firms. Rob’s research identified factors that law firm practitioners believe drive merger success and tested those across 73 large U.S. and U.K. law firm mergers that took place between 2002 and 2017. Instead of addressing each factor singly, the method he used identified the configurations of factors consistent with successful outcomes. He describes several such configurations, contributing significantly to our understanding of how best to optimise the likelihood of success in law firm mergers.

Shape of the legal market (part III)

    Sector Knowledge/Expertise

    The Sixth Generation Law firm

Since the late 19th century, law firms have evolved from being tiny, generalist legal practices into the large, sophisticated modern advisory businesses that we know today. This evolution has taken place through a number of clear “generations”, each responding to changes in the market with a clear step-change in business model. We stand on the threshold of another step-change. How will the most successful, “best-of-breed” medium sized law firms of 2024-2030 be different to those of the past decade? What must remain constant, amidst such change? How are client needs changing and how will this impact the services that they will buy from law firms? What do law firm leaders need to do in order to align their businesses with emerging market realities?

AI and your firm’s legacy – what decisions should you be taking now both to face the threat and exploit the opportunity?

Most firms are taking perfectly logical steps to address the challenges that AI presents – logical steps that are aligned to their incentives. But, as experience from previous industrial transformation shows, logical steps limited by short term incentives may eventually lead to extinction.  What can you do now to help your firm to thrive in the age of AI?  What can you do now to “plant trees you will never see”?

Tim Gordon, Founding Partner, Best Practice AI
